Associate Membership

Before becoming a Full Member of the Association and being entitled to all privileges of full membership, including the use of the title ‘landscape architect’ in Ontario, applicants must first become an Associate Member, and complete the Professional Development Program (PDP).

The PDP consists of three components that can be done simultaneously.

  1. Experience Reports with an Advisor
Once an Associate application is approved, the individual will be given a mandatory PDP experience period to complete before they can apply for full membership (24-72 months). The Associate’s advisor will approve each report and will also provide a mid and final assessment to complete this requirement.
  2. Landscape Architect Registration Examination (L.A.R.E.)
Successful completion of the Landscape Architect Registration Examination (L.A.R.E.) is required for licensure as a landscape architect. Three passed sections allow the Associate to apply for full membership with certificate. Four passed exams also grant the custody of the Association seal.
  3. Independent Course of Study (ICS)
All Associates complete the independent course of study. Associates are expected to work with their Advisor to confirm their reading list, provide updates on progress with each experience report and read all of the required readings.

Suggestions for your Search for an Advisor

Some applicants have asked how to find an advisor. Here are a few suggestions.

Basics – what does the advisor do? Your advisor will support you during your PDP to ensure you gain experience in the main areas of landscape architecture for Ontario. In addition, your advisor will ensure you are aware of local regulations to ensure your designs will ensure the safety and welfare of the public.

Advisor requirements: Your advisor must be an OALA Full Member with a minimum of four (4) years’ experience as a full member.
