For over 35 years, the team at Basterfield & Associates Inc. (B&A) has been planning, designing, transforming, constructing and stewarding natural and built spaces in Peterborough, the Kawartha Lakes region and across central and eastern Ontario.  Established in 1987, B&A is an award-winning landscape architectural firm providing comprehensive consulting services in landscape architecture, urban design and environmental planning.

We are a tight-knit and highly capable team with over 150 collective years of experience in planning, design construction.  Our team has designed and delivered projects for both public and private facilities for a variety of urban and rural clients including federal, provincial and municipal governments, private sector clients, educational and institutional organizations, with a focus on public parks, waterfronts, streetscapes and civic urban spaces.

Our office is located in the heart of downtown Peterborough, with nearby restaurants, shops, cafés and footsteps from the local trail network system and Trans Canada trail.  Peterborough is a mid-sized community situated on the Trent-Severn Waterway, surrounded by a diverse network of lakes, rivers and forests with endless opportunity for outdoor recreation and leisure.  The City is host to Trent University, Fleming College, and a vibrant arts and entertainment culture.

The Opportunity:

Our team is seeking an enthusiastic Intermediate or Senior Landscape Architect to join us in a full-time permanent position.  We are interested in speaking with candidates who are excited to take a leadership role in the evolution of our professional practice, and who care about making a visible difference in the communities within which we live and work.

About You:

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor and/or Masters’ degree in Landscape Architecture (a degree in Urban Design, Community Planning or other allied discipline may be considered).
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a comparable consulting role
  • Full member of the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (OALA) or other Canadian LA association (those actively pursuing registration may be considered).
  • Solid working knowledge of local landscape conditions, drawings and construction standards is preferable.
  • An established network of contacts and clients in central and eastern Ontario is desirable.

Desired Skills, Strengths & Interests

  • Consider yourself a “full spectrum practitioner,” with experience and expertise in proposal and report writing, project management, all phases of design, cost estimating and specifications, procurement and contracts, construction administration, etc.
  • Demonstrate high fluency in AutoCAD, Office365, Adobe Creative Suite and SketchUp. Hand drawing skills are considered a strong asset.
  • Demonstrate strong written, interpersonal communication and presentation skills, including significant experience with public and stakeholder engagement approaches and processes.
  • Have direct project experience working in a multi-disciplinary design or construction setting with allied design professionals (e.g. engineering, planning, environmental, transportation, arborists, surveyors, etc.).
  • Take pride in a positive and collaborative spirit when working with clients, colleagues, consultants, contractors, approval authorities, and members of the public.
  • Practice superb time management skills, able to manage multiple projects and deadlines, and possess a high level of attention to detail and quality.
