Membership Categories

The by-laws of the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects provide for five categories of OALA membership and affiliation.

Full Members

In Ontario, only Full Members of the Association have the lawful right to use the designation “landscape architect” as provided for in clause 10.(1) of the OALA Act. Persons who are not Full Members of the OALA and use the title “landscape architect" are subject to prosecution. Full Members have the right to vote at the Annual Meeting, are eligible to serve on all committees, and to hold elected positions on Council.

Interns (Landscape Architectural Intern)

Individuals aspiring to Full Membership must first join the Association as Intern Members and complete the Professional Development Program (PDP). Intern Members may serve on committees and hold office as the Intern representative on Council. They may not vote, except in the election of the Intern representative, and are not entitled to use the “Landscape Architect” title or the OALA designation in any form.

Affiliates

Affiliate Members are individuals interested in the profession of landscape architecture who have contributed to its study, appreciation, or practice. They may serve on select committees but cannot vote and are not entitled to use the “Landscape Architect” title or the OALA designation in any form.

Student Members

Student Members are individuals enrolled in an accredited or related landscape architecture program in Ontario who wish to affiliate with the Association. They may attend and participate in meetings and serve on committees but cannot vote, except in the election of the Student representative on Council. Student Members may not use the “Landscape Architect” title or the OALA designation in any form.

Honourary Members

Honourary Members are individuals who are not landscape architects but have been recognized for notable service in advancing the profession of landscape architecture in Ontario by the Association. They may participate in Association meetings and serve on committees, but cannot vote, hold office, or use the OALA designation.
