ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Centre (CBC), will host and lead a series of five webinars, with the support from partners: United Nations Environment Programme, Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Interna-tional Union for Conservation of Nature, Regions4 and the European Committee of the Regions, to explore the key role of subnational and local governments in the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Considering the role of subnational and local governments was a “game changer” at COP15 in December 2022, it is important to keep momentum while focusing on strategies for the implementation of the GBF as we start preparing for the COP16 taking place in 2024.

Tracking local actions through monitoring and reporting systems supports data collection and knowledge building to foster the development for global action on biodiversity that integrate subnational and local needs. This strengthens multilevel actions towards the implementation of the GBF and the 2030 targets.

The session will have a panel discussion with key partners and government representatives to address the invaluable contribution of local and subnational governments in their reporting and monitoring and mostly the benefits of engaging in knowledge building platforms. The main points to discuss include, how to extend the practice of local reporting and monitoring systems, and its opportunities for vertical cooperation for policy action.
