About Trophic Design

Trophic Design is a certified Indigenous-owned and operated Landscape Architecture firm with offices in Toronto and Cobourg. We are one of Canada's only Indigenous-led landscape architecture practices. Our work spans public realm, urban infrastructure, and cultural landscape projects across the Greater Toronto Area and beyond. We hold leadership roles on landmark initiatives including Waterfront Toronto's Ookwemin Minising project, Northcrest's YZD Downsview Indigenous Hub and District plans, and a growing portfolio of Indigenous advisory and peacekeeping engagements with First Nations, municipalities, and major institutions. 

About the Role

We are seeking a Landscape Architect with 5+ years of professional experience practicing in Canada to lead mid- to large-scale public realm, infrastructure, and master planning projects. This role requires strong project management leadership, interdisciplinary coordination, and mentorship capacity. This role is suited to an intermediate level or emerging senior level Landscape Architect with strong project management experience and demonstrated leadership capabilities.

Responsibilities

Project Leadership & Management

  • Lead projects from concept through construction
  • Manage timelines, budgets, consultants, deliverables, and quality control
  • Direct project management responsibility
  • Guide Schematic Design, Design Development, Construction Documentation, and Contract Administration
  • Prepare clear written documentation and coordinate consultant packages
  • Lead client, consultant, contractor, and community meetings and presentations
  • Support field review and construction administration

Leadership & Studio Development

  • Provide technical and relational leadership
  • Experience mentoring junior staff and/or leading small project teams
  • Support collaboration and knowledge-sharing within the studio

Indigenous Collaboration

  • Work respectfully within Indigenous-led and advisory contexts
  • Engage Nation-specific protocols with humility and consent-based practice
  • Contribute to long-term, relationship-based engagement processes

Indigenous engagement at Trophic Design is relational and ongoing. Candidates must be comfortable working within timelines that adapt to community processes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture
  • OALA membership or eligibility required (support for licensure and continuing education provided)
  • 5+ years professional experience within Canadian regulatory environments, public procurement, and construction standards
  • Experience managing mid- to large-scale projects
  • Demonstrated success leading projects through design, documentation, and construction
  • Experience in public realm, civic infrastructure, and master planning
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience leading meetings, workshops, and interdisciplinary coordination
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, Vectorworks (preferred), AutoCAD or equivalent, Adobe Creative Suite, Rhino/SketchUp
  • Construction phase and field experience

Cultural competency is understood as an ongoing practice grounded in humility, listening, consent, and respect for Nation-specific protocols. Experience working with Indigenous communities or organizations is an asset. Indigenous ancestry is also an asset.
