The OALA By-Laws provides for the Honourary Member category. OALA By-laws 3.09 HONOURARY MEMBERS states:
“To be admitted as an Honourary Member of the Association, an individual shall be nominated in accordance with applicable Policies and Procedures; not be a current or past Full Member of the Association; have performed notable service in advancing the course of landscape architecture in the Province of Ontario; and, be appointed by Council in accordance with applicable Policies and Procedures.”
Honourary Members shall have the privilege of attending and participating in Members meetings, but are not eligible to vote, hold office, be elected to Council or to use the designation “landscape architect”. Honourary Members shall be eligible to serve on committees.
The “Honourary Member” designation shall not be used on any letterhead, card, or sign, nor shall it be used, except with the official consent of Council, in any other place or manner, lest its use be interpreted to imply the Honourary Member is a Full Member of the Association.
This award recognizes individuals, such as those from the general public, a public figure, a member of allied profession, a member of an organization having similar goals and mission and who is not a Member of the OALA.
The nominee should have performed notable service in advancing the profession of landscape architecture or the course of landscape architecture in Ontario. Notable services could be in the form of support through action, advocacy or writing about landscape architects or landscape architecture. The work completed should have some impact or effect on the advancement of the OALA, landscape architects and the profession of landscape architecture in Ontario.
The nominator must be either a Full Member or a Committee of the OALA.
In addition to the nominator: A minimum of 1 letter of endorsement is required by a Full Member of the OALA.
The submission should state or address the actions of the nominee that best exemplifies their support and advocacy for the OALA, landscape architects and landscape architecture in Ontario.
The nominee emulates the fundamental principles of the OALA’s Mission, Vision and Core Values.
The description of the action or work performed should note where and how they have advanced, acknowledge, advocate, broaden awareness and educate the audience on the work of the OALA, landscape architects and landscape architecture in Ontario.
Their endorsement and continued support of the OALA, landscape architects and landscape architecture in Ontario must be evident and significant and not be misconstrued to be a one-time support.
